How to Play Blackjack Online

We’re not exaggerating when we tell you it takes just seconds to fire up the fun with an online blackjack game.

And although it’s one of the most beginner-friendly casino games going, the intensity and excitement of a round is appealing to all kinds of players, regardless of their level of experience.

The online blackjack world is home to many different variations of the game. These often include optional side bets, which we’ll cover shortly, and which add even more fun to the mix.

But here’s what to expect when you play blackjack in its simplest form.

At the start of a game, you’ll receive two cards, both facing up. If these two cards add up to 21, that’s a blackjack, and you win. A two-card blackjack hand will beat any other hand with a value of 21.

The dealer receives one card face up and one card face down. If the dealer also gets a blackjack, the game is tied, and your bet will be a push (you get your stake paid back to you).

If your first two cards don’t add up to 21, it’s your choice whether to stick with the hand value you currently have or receive an additional card. If you choose an extra card that pushes your hand’s combined value greater than 21, it’s a bust and you lose.

But if your three-card hand reaches a value of, let’s say 19, and you decide to stand, you’ll have to wait to see whether the dealer’s hand gets closer to a 21. Here, if the dealer ends up with a hand of 18 or less, you win. Should both you and the dealer finish with a hand of the same value – 19 in this case – it will again be a push.

So, to summarize:

  • Aim to get a hand with a final value of 21, ideally with your first two cards but, if not, with extra cards
  • Avoid going over 21 and consider whether to hit (receive another card) or stand (stick with your current hand) based on what you have in front of you
  • Tied games – where you and the dealer have the same hand value – result in a push, where you get your stake paid back to you

Now that you have the basics down, it’s time to check out the most common rules of online blackjack as well as features and things to look out for when you get a game started.

How Is Online Blackjack Different?

By and large, a classic or traditional type of online blackjack will have the same rules as those you’d expect to find in person. But as you might expect, different variations of the game will come with different rules.

Don’t worry – you'll find these rules in that game’s main menu, so you know what - if any - differences there are.

There are features you may already be familiar with, like surrender, which is where you can forfeit half of your wager when you receive your first two cards and see the dealer’s first card. And there are certain rules the dealer must follow too, such as drawing on a hand with a value of 16 or standing on one with a value of 17.

But, in online blackjack, there are many other features built to make your experience super smooth. These include the Lightning option, which skips animations to speed up gameplay, and the Rebet and Deal option, which automatically places the same wager as the previous round. You can even change the table’s felt color in some games – good luck trying that in person!

You’ll also only ever be a few clicks or taps away from the game’s paytables and rules, so you never have to be unsure about what to expect or how to play.

These features are just a hint of what you can expect. But it’s already quite clear just how online blackjack perfectly combines all the exciting aspects of the classic table game with the comforts of today’s technology to make for the ultimate online casino experience.

Online Blackjack Bets, Odds, and Payouts

You’ll be pleased to know that the odds and payouts for online blackjack are just as straightforward as the game itself.

With the traditional game in mind, they are as follows:

  • Blackjack – 3:2
  • Winning hand – 1:1
  • Tie – push (your bet is paid back to you)

Depending on which game you choose, you might also encounter payout ratios for side bets. These bets are optional, and they’re designed to be played alongside your regular bet and bring even more fun to the game. Popular side bets include:

  • Insurance – 2:1

Insurance lets you protect half your stake if the dealer’s first card is an Ace.

  • Perfect Pairs – 5:1 for a mixed color pair, 10:1 for a same color pair, 30:1 for a perfect pair (two identical cards)

With a Perfect Pairs side bet, you wager on whether there will be two of the same cards same suit in your hand.

  • 21+3 – ranges from 5:1 to 100:1

Play two table games at once! 21+3 transforms your two cards and one of the dealer’s into a three-card poker hand. The various hands available in this side bet account for the range in payout ratios.

These are just a few of the side bets available on our online blackjack games. If they look interesting to you, why not check out our selection of games and see what else is on offer?

Looking to sharpen your blackjack skills alone before you go head-to-head with the dealer? With most of our games, you can do this in a safe setting where you aren’t risking any money.

That’s because they come with a neat little feature called Demo Mode, which, when selected, launches the game as normal, with the key difference being that you’re playing with free game credits, not a real money stake.

With this feature, you can get to grips with a game and all of its side bets and features – if it comes with them.

Those who are already familiar with blackjack can benefit from Demo Mode, too. It lets you take your time really nailing down your strategies and approaches without the fear of your bankroll taking a hit.

No matter what your experience level is with online blackjack, Demo Mode is a valuable tool to add to your arsenal.

It’s also an area where online casinos have the edge over traditional casinos – you’ll be hard-pressed to find the Demo Mode feature at a table in person!

Real Money Online Blackjack Games

So, you’ve gone up against the dealer a few times in Demo Mode and now you feel ready to take them on for the chance to win a cash prize.

You might be asking yourself, "Can I really play this blackjack game on my phone or computer for real money?" And the answer is a resounding yes. While it might seem too good to be true, when you play with Bally Bet Casino, you can expect to receive any cash prize you win and withdraw to your wallet.

We completely understand wanting to be cautious when it comes to playing online games with your money. That’s why we thought it worth mentioning that Bally Bet Casino holds operator licenses in every state where we have an online product. We’re regulated by the relevant governmental agencies that oversee online gaming in each state, too. The bottom line: When you play with us, you’re in safe hands.

Now all you need to do is fund your account and fire up the game you want to play. You’ll then be able to choose how much you’d like to wager and get the game started.

And because these games use cutting-edge software to ensure that every turn is randomized, you won’t need to wait around for a dealer or other players. That means you can really play how you like, when you like.

Online Blackjack Strategies

Like with other table games, some blackjack fans will spend a lot of time weighing up which plan of attack works best for them.

And while we’re all for you flexing your creativity, and while your strategy may seem foolproof, we also need to remind you that blackjack remains a game of chance. That means there’s no way you can ever be completely certain you’ll win.

But as far as popular blackjack strategies are concerned, the main types you’ll find tend to make use of the number of decks available, whether that’s four, six, or even eight. These strategies may not even be applicable to the game you’re playing – check the game rules to see how many decks are in use.

Others are based on being tactical about when you hit, stand, surrender, split, and double down. As a quick example, some players like to split Aces and eights, because of how those two cards can affect the final hand.

And then there are those strategies based on the practice of card counting, which is where you choose what to do next depending on who you think, statistically, has the upper hand – you or the dealer.

You can also look at other table games like roulette for strategic inspiration. Systems such as the Martingale, which is where you double your stake on a losing bet and continue to do so for each subsequent loss, may be of interest to you. The idea behind this particular strategy is that one win will make up for all the losses, because of the increases in the money you stake.

As you can see, there are lots of avenues to explore when it comes to blackjack strategies. But we’d suggest that, for most people, getting a game started, choosing a suitable wager, and making informed, responsible decisions when you receive your hand will be more than enough for a few rounds of fun.
